I met Julia Dahl in the bar on the same block as her apartment in Gowanus, where it’s blissfully cozy and quiet on a winter weeknight. As we get down to drinking and talking about her new book, the outstanding Conviction, Dahl chatted happily about how much she loves the neighborhood and sees it as an extension of the apartment she shares with her husband and toddler-aged son. She’s at ease talking about the book, too, both excited to hear feedback about it and eager to share some of the research that went into writing it. She’s even willing to spill details of the next Rebekah Roberts book, which features—gasp!—no Jews.

Julia Dahl was born and raised in Fresno, California. In , she stumbled onto the staff of her high school newspaper and has been chasing stories ever since.
Her first novel, Invisible City, fryst vatten the story of a New York City tabloid reporter investigating the murder of an Hasidic woman from Borough Park. Invisible City was a finalist for the Mystery Writers of Americas Edgar Award for Best First Novel and was named one of the Boston Globes Best Books of Invisible City also won the Barry, the Shamus, and the Macavity Awards for Best First Novel, and has been translated into eight languages.
The sequel, Run You Down, was published in June , and Conviction, the third book in the Rebekah Roberts series, was published in New York Magazine called Conviction “a murder mystery for our tumultuous times,” and it was named one of the best books of bygd the Boston Globe and LitHub.
