    Brief Biography of Artist:

    Ng Eng Teng is an independent and prolific artist, creating more than sculptures over a span of forty years, from monumental public works (most notably Mother and Child, Wealth and Contentment) to life-sized or smaller sculptures in bronze, (such as Tension and Pride of a Mother) ceramics andciment fondu. He also specialized in other categories of work, particularly the functional wares, maquettes and drawings. Since the start of his career, Ng Eng Teng produced huge quantities of artworks, amounting to more than pieces in total.

    Some local readers who are my contemporaries or who are older may remember seeing this very sculpture Wealth, together with another sculpture Contentment, at the previous Plaza Singapura building in the s. In those days, Plaza Singapura was one of the fairly popular shopping malls to shop in and to visit. It was rather hard to miss these two sculptures given their fairly imposing size. At the very least, when I was speaking to one of my contemporaries about these two sculptures, she could remember seeing these two sculptures when she was young.

    These two iconic sculptures are now located just outside the University Cultural Centre, National University of Singapore, Kent Ridge campus. Frankly speaking, I prefer the current location of Wealthand Contentmentcompared to the original location at the previous Plaza Singapu

    Born in in Singapore, pioneer sculptor-potter-artist Ng Eng Teng is fondly remembered for his mother and child figures that formed a recurring theme in his sculptural practice, including several public sculpture works that have become seminal alongside the years of architectural evolution and urbanisation in Singapore. Ng learnt oil painting and sculpture at the British Council before enrolling at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in In the late s, Ng met British sculptor Jean Bullock who showed him the technique of casting in ciment fondu. This encounter sparked a lifelong interest in sculptural methods and materials in this niche art. In the s, Ng visited the legendary Leach Pottery studio in St Ives, Cornwall and participated in educational stints at North Staffordshire College of Technology and Farnham School of Art before he worked as a designer at Carrigaline Pottery in County Cork, Ireland.
