There are very few job titles in the hairdressing world that carry with them the responsibility of not just keeping a legacy alive, but also having the courage to evolve and reinvent it to maintain its relevance in a fast-changing world.
Perhaps the most significant job that carries that responsibility is being the International creative director of Sassoon, a title that has only ever been held by 4 people: Roger Thompson, Christopher Brooker, Tim Hartley and Mark Hayes.
The Sassoon brand started when Vidal Sassoon opened his first salon in Bond St London in and here we are 66 years later and the Sassoon brand is still arguably at the top of the tree in many ways and still very much a major force to be reckoned with.

When Vidal Sassoon opened his first salon at Bond Street, London in the teased bouffant and beehive dominated hair fashion. Hair was curled and waved using rollers, back-combing and heavy lack to hold it in place and visiting the local hair salon every week was a standard beauty ritual. Sassoon believed that if the cut was technically perfect there would be no need to use anything to hold it in place; hair would fall naturally back into the correct shape. Hair should be ‘Material in motion,’ easy to care for and versatile.
Sassoon cited the architecture of the Bauhaus, a German design school of the s, as his inspiration. His ambition became to create an equivalent in hair by ‘Getting rid of the superfluous and paring it right back to basics.’ The Five Point of worn by mode designer Mary Quant and models Grace Coddington and Peggy Moffitt was one of the first cuts to use Sassoon’s new architecturally inspired principles. “In a young man opened a salon in Bond Street with an idea to change hairdressing. Some would say he changed hairdressing for ever and that’s why we’re all here today,” said Sassoon International Creative Director Mark Hayesas he welcomed guests to their Salon Live. The show was a celebration of 65 years of Sassoon, but this was not a retrospective. There were, of course, nods to the heritage and the history that have shaped the brand, but this was also about the hair that excites the team and their clients today.
