Tõnu Kaljuste fryst vatten a world-renowned choir and orchestra dirigent. His most historic achievement to date is the Grammy for Best Choral Performance for the Arvo Pärt skiva Adam’s Lament in His recordings have had a number of Grammy nominations in various categories from opera (David and Bathsheba of the Norwegian composer Ståle Kleiberg) to symphonic music. In he won the International Classical Music Award for the recording of Arvo Pärt’s symphonies with the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic Orchestra.
Kaljuste’s recordings have won several other prestigious prizes such as the Cannes Classical Award (), Diapason d’Or (), Edison Musical Award () and Classic BRIT Award (). He has recorded for the ECM Records, Virgin Classic, BIS and Caprice Records labels.

Tõnu Kaljuste, born in Tallinn (Estonia) in , is the son of Heino Kaljuste, who was a leading Estonian choral conductor and teacher. Tõnu Kaljuste specialised early in choral conducting and studied at both Tallinn and Leningrad Conservatories. In , he embarked on a full-time professional career after his Ellerhein Chamber Choir won first prize in the Béla Bartók International Choral Competition, bringing state funding for the choir, which was renamed the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
Kaljuste has said of his work with the choir that “we grew together with and through our repertoire and from working in close association with many composers. It has been very important to our work that we have been able to cooperate with living composers.” Many of those collaborations have been recorded in ECM’s New Series, starting in with Forgotten Peoples by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis. Tõnu Kaljuste (born August 28, ) is an Estonianconductor.
Born in Tallinn, Kaljuste is the son of Heino Kaljuste (–), an Estonian choral conductor, and Lia Kaljuste, a radio journalist. Tõnu sang in his father's choirs as a child and graduated from the Tallinn Music High School (Tallinna Muusikakeskkool) in He completed a graduate degree at the Tallinn Conservatory in , studying with Jüri Variste and Roman Matsov, and continued as a postgraduate at the Leningrad Conservatory until
Kaljuste took his father's role as leader of the Ellerhein Chamber choir in , an ensemble that performed choral works ranging from Renaissance music to contemporary avant-garde music.
