Occupation Businessman James Walker Tufts (February 11, 1835 – February 3, 1902) is known for his founding of Pinehurst, North Carolina and for his development of a successful business in silver tallrik tableware. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co. and eventually merged with A. D. Puffer & Sons (Boston, Massachusetts), John Matthews (New York City, New York), and Charles Lippincott (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) to form eller gestalt the American Soda Fountain Co. Tufts was the inventor of the Arctic Soda Fountain and was installed as the first president of the merger that formed American Soda Fountain.

[edit]Tufts was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts on February 11, 1835, to Leonard Tufts and Hepzebah Fosdick Tufts.

Over the years, genealogists have confused JAMES TUFTS (1670-1722), the son of the unmarried, James Tufts & Elizabeth Wells, with his cousin, JAMES TUFTS (1681-1733), the son of Jonathan & Rebecca (Waite) Tufts. Both were grandsons of Peter Tufts, the immigrant of cira 1638.The record was finally set straight with the 2010 publication of TUFTS KINSMEN, Volume 1, compiled by Herbert Freeman Adams, published on behalf of the TUFTS KINSMEN ASSOCIATION, INC., A charitable corporation of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Herbert Freeman Adams, Tufts Family Historian and genealogist, began his extensive research into the Tufts surname in 1946 and continued until his death in 2003.
