Beauty of Baroque ~ a weekly indulgence of art from an amazing era
It seems appropriate at this season to choose a work with a theme that is in keeping with the traditions of the time. We see a scene of energy and peace all at the same time. Warm light is the chief aspect of this work and gives the viewer a feeling of warmth, coziness and protection. We see the Virgin Mary sitting at what looks like a desk and it appears that she has been reading a book. Suddenly her quiet room has become a whirlwind of activity. The heavens have literally opened up and a whole host of beings have entered her room. She seems to be calm however and there is not the sense of fear, or surprise or unexpectedness. In fact, it is almost seems as if she was somehow expecting this event to occur. An angel is offering her flowers, a Lily, symbolic of her chastity. The emissary is here to deliver an important message as she points upward to God and the heaven that only now has become tangibly visible. Th

"Born in Rome of Lombardic extraction, Odazzi was a student of Giovanni Ferri and later of Giovanni Battista Gaulli, becoming his favorite collaborator and totally absorbing his style. Odazzi's earliest works thoroughly reflect the manner of his master. The artist later became more independent, but in the process lost much of the painterly merits of his prototype.
