    Ghalib’s Urdu ghazals attract highly diverse people. The plausible reasons appear to be that his couplets, which are expressed in the most exquisite language, using devices such as word play, hyperbole, irony and paradox, reflect diverse situations, depict a range of human emotions, and provide deep insights into man’s life and his relationship with the all-encompassing Nature.

    In literature, particularly in Urdu and English languages, works on Ghalib’s poetry, published and even on the internet, abound; and, their divergence is mind boggling. Different interpreters have presented not only divergent but even opposite understanding of Ghalib’s verses! Perhaps the following reasons could be conjectured for the same.
