    Formed by slang för mikrofon Rutherford as a splinter group who worked during breaks in the schedule of his day job with Genesis, Mike and The Mechanics hit the big time in their own right in with the US number one 'The Living Years', a song Rutherford wrote (with B.A. Robertson) about his father.

    Rutherford originally launched the band in with Paul Carrack, Paul Young, Adrian Lee and Peter Van Hooke, with a self-titled debut skiva and the hit single 'Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)'.     Mike and the Mechanics (stylised as Mike + The Mechanics) are an English rock supergroup formed in Dover in by Mike Rutherford, initially as a side project during a hiatus period for his other group Genesis. The band are known for the hit singles "Silent Running", "All I Need Is a Miracle", "Taken In", "The Living Years", "Word of Mouth", and "Over My Shoulder".

    Initially, the band included Rutherford (the only constant member), vocalists Paul Carrack and Paul Young, keyboardist Adrian Lee, and drummer Peter Van Hooke. After a decade together, Lee and Van Hooke dropped out in and were not replaced. Following Young's death in , Carrack became the band's sole lead vocalist until when the band (essentially a duo at this point) dissolved, with Rutherford and Carrack both agreeing the band had "run its course".[1] In , the band was revived with Rutherford headlining a completely new set of musicians, including vocalists Andrew

    Hits is a compilation album by Mike + The Mechanics, released in except in the United States and Canada, where it was released in It contains nearly all of the band's hits up to the time of its release. "All I Need Is a Miracle" was re-recorded for the album.

    In September the album was repackaged as a double CD with the band's album Rewired as Rewired + Hits. The cover is a close up of part of the Rewired cover overlaid with both album covers side by side.

    Peter Kane in Q wrote, "These are all songs that are uniformly high on melody and craftsmanship, with mercifully no hidden agenda."[3] In a retrospective review, AllMusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine declared Hits "a first-rate compilation, giving the casual fan all of the essential Mike + the Mechanics tracks".[2]
