The Ghosts of Lindy Boggs Medical Center
Posted: 07.23.2021 | Updated: 01.20.2025
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on New Orleans. When the levees broke, the city flooded, destroying homes, businesses, and lives. Lindy Boggs Medical Center, much like Charity Hospital, was among the many hospitals destroyed in the storm. They lost power right at capacity, meaning doctors couldn’t perform life-saving procedures, killing dozens of patients.
Over 1,400 people were killed in the aftermath. A big part of the reason so many died was due to the destruction of vital infrastructure.
Abandoned after the hurricane, having taken heavy damage, the now-vacant hospital is home to several urban legends. Urban explorers, vandals, thrillseekers, and all manners of unsavory characters are attracted to its shadowy hallways.
Over the years, many say the building has become haunted.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Developers told a packed room of Mid-City neighbors the plan to convert the abandoned Lindy Boggs healthcare facility into a nursing home has fizzled out, and what’s next for the graffiti-covered eyesore is uncertain.
During the Mid-City Neighborhood Organization meeting Monday night (Nov. 11), Woodward Interests president Bill Hoffman told MCNO and assembled neighbors that a U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) loan his company had worked for years to secure had been scrapped, because the company Woodward was working with had pulled out of the project.
The HUD loan, Hoffman told neighbors, had taken so long to secure because a special circumstance had to be applied for, due to the fact that the former Lindy Boggs Medical Center (and Mercy Hospital) had a basement in a flood zone.
While the special circumstance eventually was granted, by then the interested nursing home had to find another location.
