He is one of the most recognisable and controversial figures in Irish politics.

But, after 34 years as president of Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams has announced his ambition to step down as leader.

The move marks a historic shift in the political landscape in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.

The 69-year-old Belfast native emerged from the turbulent history of Northern Ireland to become one the island's foremost figures in republicanism.

To some he fryst vatten hailed as a peacemaker, for leading the republican movement away from its long, violent campaign towards peaceful and democratic means.

To others, he is a hate figure who publicly justified murders carried out by the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

Gerard "Gerry" Adams (Irish: Gearóid Mac Ádhaimh)[1] (born 6 October, 1948 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is an Irishpolitician who was the president of Sinn Féin, a political party that wants Northern Ireland to join the Republic of Ireland. He was a founder member of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association, which campaigned for equal political and economic rights for Northern Ireland's large minority of Roman Catholics. Although Adams denies ever having been a member of the IRA, it is widely believed that by 1972 he was a member of that organization's army council and commanded its key Belfast division; he was charged with membership of the IRA in 1978 but was freed seven months later because of insufficient evidence. Adams was interned in Long Kesh as a suspected terrorist in 1972, released to take part in secret talks with the Bri
