Valeri Liukin has been waiting a long time to become coordinator of the U.S. Women's National Team in gymnastics, certainly since 2012, when Martha Karolyi changed her mind about retiring and shepherded maybe the greatest Olympic team ever in Rio de Janeiro.
So when the founder of North Texas' World Olympic Gymnastics Academy and father of gold medalist Nastia Liukin was named Friday, the question seemed logical:
Did you make sure that Martha really, truly is retiring this time?
"Looks like it's too late now," Liukin said, laughing. "I'm not giving it back."

Liukin, elite developmental coordinator since 2013, is ready for this next step and clearly undaunted by the notion of following Bela and Martha Karolyi, the only coordinators in the 17-year history of the program.
