Frank William Erickson (Born 1 September, in Spokane, Washington - Died 21 October, ) the son of Frank O. and Myrtle (Leck) Erickson, began studying piano at the age of eight, trumpet at ten, and wrote his first band composition when he was in high school. He received his Mus.B. in and his Mus.M. in , both from the University of Southern California. Before entering college he studied privately with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and with Halsey Stevens and Clarence Sawhill after enrolling at USC.
Erickson was a composer, conductor, arranger, and author of books on band method. He also lectured at the University of California at Los Angeles () and was professor of music at San Jose State University. For a number of years he worked for a music publishing company, and later be

Before he was 10, Frank began his study of trumpet and piano, and during his last year in high school composed his first concert band number, The Fall of Evening. Following four years in the service during World War II, he began his writing career as a jazz arranger and, as his interest in serious music grew, he began studies in composition with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He later entered the University of Southern California as a composition major and while a student began arranging half-time shows for the USC Marching Band. By the time he received his masters degree from USC he had several published band numbers, the first of which was Liittle Suite for Band. Frank William Erickson (September 1, – October 21, ) was an American composer, conductor, arranger, writer, and trumpet player.[1][2]
Growing up
[edit]The son of Frank O.. Myrtle Erickson, Frank Erickson was born and raised in Spokane, Washington. He began his instrumental career at the age of eight, playing piano, and at age ten, playing trumpet. In high school, he wrote his first composition for the band, The Fall of Evening.

World War II began when Erickson was He served with the United States Army Air Forces from to , working as a weather forecaster and arranging music for several army bands.

After the war, Erickson worked as a jazz arranger, namely for Earle Spencer and His Orchestra (); and he played trumpet. He also studied composition with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco during this time period.
