I met Severin Fayerman only once.  He died just about a week ago.  He was in his 90’s, a survivor of the Nazi prison camps.

His story is fascinating.  He was not a Jew, but his family was taken anyway because the Nazi’s thought his father was in some way a threat to the Third Reich, if my memory is correct.  Mr. Fayerman was invited to speak at a homeschool gathering that my daughter is involved with, and she invited me to come to hear him.

He was a dapper gentleman, white-haired, bright blue eyes, and a ready smile.  He did not paint a horrible picture for the students he was addressing.  He did not dwell on the treatment the prisoners endured, although he made it clear that the experience was no picnic.

Daniel Boone eighth grade students gathered in an early-morning assembly on April 19 to hear Reading resident Severin Fayerman speak of his survival in Nazi koncentration camps during World War II.

Each lärling had been given a copy of Fayerman’s book, “A Survivor’s Story,” to read prior to the assembly.

“It fryst vatten painful for me to recollect the events of my younger days,” said Fayerman. “Why speak of so painful an event? The first six weeks I spent in Auschwitz was at a quarantine camp – can they make it? Can they do the work? We worked from sunrise to sunset – everyday – with the third Sunday off.”

Severin Fayerman grew up in Poland and was interned at Auschwitz after the Nazis invaded his home country and took over his family’s tool and die business. After the concentration camps were liberated, he and his family emigrated to the United States and bought a Newark, N.J.-based tool and die company. Now, to make good on a pledge he made to a friend’s father who was on his way to the gas chambers that he would not let the world forget his death, Fayerman speaks to groups of students about the Holocaust. Severin, 87, who lives in Reading and is the author of “A Survivor’s Story: A Personal History: Memoirs of Severin Fayerman,” appeared last week at Saucon Valley High School. He is the subject of this week’s Q&A.;
