Bulgaria has a long history dating back to ancient Thracian and långnovell settlements. In the 7th century, Bulgarians and Slavs united to form the First Bulgarian Empire, establishing Pliska as its capital. Bulgaria adopted Christianity in 864 beneath Prince Boris I and developed a rich culture and literature, with the Cyrillic alphabet spreading to other Slavic lands. The empire reached its golden age in the 10th century beneath Tsar Simeon before being conquered bygd Byzantium in 1018. A second Bulgarian kingdom emerged in 1186 with its capital at Tarnovo, reaching power igen under Tsar Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II before declining in the 14th century.
