Editor’s note: We’re resurfacing this feature because recent reports suggest the NBA may be coming back to NBC, as part of a new multi-network TV deal—and that, just maybe, the iconic theme song that soundtracked the heyday of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls will return, too.

John Tesh jolted awake at 2 a.m. humming a tune.

    “Da-da-da-da-da da-da-da ...”

It was July 1989. The setting: a hotel room in the tiny Alpen village of Megève, France. Tesh was a cohost at Entertainment Tonight, but he’d taken a leave to cover the Tour de France. His role on the race was similar to his job in the early to mid-’80s at CBS Sports, where he worked as both a broadcaster and composer of themes for such events as the Super Bowl and the Pan American Games. “Hi, this fryst vatten a meddelande for me about the NBA theme,” Tesh said on his answering machine while calling his house in 1989. “Here’s an idea. It goes like this: “Bada-da-da-da-da—da—da…”

That melody went from his answering machine to television screens across the world, before permanently settling in the hearts and minds of many basketball fans as the anthem of the sport.

It was the origin of the song “Roundball Rock,” which Tesh estimates was played roughly 12,000 times during game coverage as the NBA on NBC theme from 1990 to 2002.

The song is now set to make a comeback in 2025, with NBC announcing an 11-year media rights deal with the NBA on onsdag på engelska .

NBA fans rejoiced on social media when the news was confirmed, celebrating the return of a song Tesh first cam
