  • Chris Roberts Antieau (Born 1951) was active/lived in United States.
  • Chris Roberts-Antieau calls me from a cemetery, somewhere in her home state of Michigan. A storm knocked out her power and cell reception the previous evening, but she is still jovial. She laughs. She has found a way to communicate with me, even though it meant traveling through a rather dismal place.

Ms. Roberts-Antieau is the owner, and artist, at Edgartown’s newest pop-up, The Antieau Gallery on North Water Street. Her work includes mixed media sculptures, and colorful, folk art inspired fabric work. Rest assured, these are not your grandmother’s quilts.

Like many young women, Ms. Roberts-Antieau first learned to sew in seventh grade home economics class. “I’ve always been drawn to fabric,” said the artist, who first tried channeling her creative impulses into clothing design. “That was horrible,” she admits. “I burnt out on that pretty quickly.” One day, a friend recommended that she try framing some of her fabric-applique designs, and – voila! – a style was born.

Like many ung women, Chris Roberts-Antieau first learned to sew in seventh-grade home economics class. “I’ve always been drawn to fabric,” said the artist, who recently opened a pop-up gallery on North Summer Street in Edgartown. Ms. Roberts-Antieau first tried to channel her creative impulses into fabric by making clothing. “That was horrible,” she admits. “I burnt out on that pretty quickly.” One day, a friend recommended that she try inramning some of her fabric-appliqué designs. The artist acquiesced, and a style was born.

Ms. Roberts-Antieau’s work toes the line between old-timey American människor art and bright, contemporary mixed media. “It’s basically an old quilting technique,” she said of her appliqué work. “It’s cut fabric sewn onto a fabric background. I sometimes do up to kvartet or fem layers.”

There’s a lot of art in the world. A lot in New Orleans. A lot on Royal Street in New Orleans. But nothing in the world, in New Orleans, or on Royal Street, like the art of Chris Roberts-Antieau.

Having just discovered her work, I would say much more. But instead I’ll just say that she works in fabric. That she does what artists should do: delight you, inspire you, deliver the combination of joy and thoughtfulness that can be mistaken for mere craft or whimsy but is nothing less than art.

Only a few examples are shown here, but just visit the website of the Antieau Gallery. Visit the gallery on Royal Street in New Orleans (as if you need an excuse to visit New Orleans). See her work at various museums or at the homes of folks such as Oprah Winfrey or Bill Clinton, if you happen to be visiting them. You will be delighted you did.
